Junior High School 14 Shell Bank

Summary:

Junior High School 14 Shell Bank is a public middle school in Brooklyn, New York, serving 452 students in grades 6-8 and part of New York City Geographic District #22, which is ranked 431 out of 866 districts in the state.

The school has a relatively balanced racial makeup, with 32.08% White, 32.52% African American, 18.58% Hispanic, and 12.17% Asian students, which is more diverse than some nearby schools. However, the school's academic performance has been inconsistent, ranging from a 5-star rating in 2020-2021 to a 1-star rating in 2021-2022. This variability is particularly evident across different student subgroups, with the school ranking 306 out of 388 schools for Asian students, 325 out of 696 schools for African American students, and 663 out of 772 schools for White students in 2022-2023. Despite these challenges, the school has performed relatively well in serving its English Language Learner (ELL) and special education students, ranking in the top 100 and top 600 schools, respectively, in the same year. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students (over 90%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a significant population of economically disadvantaged students.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Is 98 Bay Academy and Junior High School 234 Arthur W Cunningham, which have consistently higher academic achievement and statewide rankings, Junior High School 14 Shell Bank faces unique challenges in maintaining consistent performance and addressing disparities in subgroup performance, likely due to the high poverty rates in the community it serves.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school is a hidden treasure. The stats you see here are NOT indicative of what happens there. The. Progress Rating for this school has been number one for three years in a row, The NYS test score comparison is misleading because the tests have changed over the last 3 years, and websites like this one do not measure what is important. My child is a child- a student- a shinig star in my eyes who needs to see their own potential. The staff at this school is the most caring and nurturing I have seen in district 22. My child is not a test score, and the school is not one either. They have small classes, and schedule small group instruction based on the needs of the students. BASED ON THE INDIVIDUAL NEEDS of the student. NO OTHER SCHOOL DOES THIS. The school offers diverse activities, and character education and has organized activities for the staff and students and parents to participate in . NO OTHER SCHOOL DOES THIS. This school looks to educate and support academic , social and emotional issues of the adolescent . NO OTHER SCHOOL DOES THAT. You need to go see this school and not count it out based on a website that is not affiliated with the Department of Education . Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
