Pembroke School

Summary:

Pembroke School is an elementary school in Danbury, Connecticut, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population, the school has seen a shift in its racial makeup in recent years, with a decrease in white students and an increase in Hispanic students. However, Pembroke School consistently underperforms compared to the Danbury School District and the state of Connecticut in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subjects.

Pembroke School has a low statewide ranking, consistently placing in the bottom half of Connecticut elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance on standardized tests varies significantly among different student subgroups, with Hispanic students outperforming white students in English Language Arts. Additionally, Pembroke School has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting a relatively high proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. When compared to other nearby elementary schools in the Danbury School District, such as King Street Intermediate School and Hayestown Avenue School, Pembroke School consistently underperforms.

While Pembroke School's current performance is concerning, the data indicates that there may be pockets of success, such as the relatively higher proficiency rates in 5th-grade English Language Arts and 5th-grade Science. By identifying and building upon these areas of strength, the school may be able to develop strategies to improve overall academic achievement. Addressing the challenges at Pembroke School will require a comprehensive approach that considers the unique demographic and socioeconomic factors influencing the school's outcomes, with the goal of providing a more equitable learning environment for all its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am substitute for this school and love it! It not only has a superb staff, it also has a stellar, inviting community that makes you instantly feel welcome. There town hall meetings are awesome! They really value kindness and making positive choices. If I could I would move my own child into this school! The special ed dept. is amazing! The school really makes an environment a welcoming one for kids to be accepted no matter what their background. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
