Summary:

Academy For Conservation And The Environment is a public high school serving grades 9-12 in Brooklyn, New York, with a student population of 383. Unfortunately, this school has consistently struggled, ranking in the bottom 10-15% of New York high schools over the past decade and earning a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger, indicating it is among the lowest-performing schools in the state.

The school's challenges are widespread, with low rankings across various student subgroups, including female, male, Asian, Hispanic, and low socioeconomic status students. However, the school performs relatively better for African American and English Language Learner students. Additionally, the school's four-year graduation rate has ranged from 67.6% to 94.0%, which is below the state average, and its dropout rate has been as high as 10.0%, significantly higher than the state average. Interestingly, the nearby schools in the same New York City Geographic District #18 also struggle academically, with similar low rankings and ratings. However, one school, Brooklyn Bridge Academy, stands out as a higher-performing school within the same district, ranking in the top 20% of New York high schools and achieving a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. Despite the school's poor performance, Academy For Conservation And The Environment has a relatively high per-student spending level and a low student-teacher ratio, suggesting that addressing student engagement and strengthening instructional practices may be crucial areas for improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote If you are looking for a great school, with small classes and teachers that really care about the students ACE as we call it is the one. ACE is a school were students are known by their name and the staff really take the time to find out who these kids are. The Principal can usually be found outside in the morning to ensure the kids get past security and into the building without any problems. The students also have all the activities of a larger school with the inclusion of PSAL sports. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
