Curry Elementary School

Summary:

Curry Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Jasper, Alabama, serving grades PK-4 with a student population of 547. The school is part of the Walker County School District, which is ranked 56 out of 137 districts in Alabama and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Curry Elementary School stands out for its significantly higher percentage of white students (93.78%) compared to the state and surrounding schools like Sumiton Elementary (79.27% white), Parrish ElementaryMiddle (78.7% white), and Cordova Elementary (86.89% white). However, the school's academic performance in mathematics and science is consistently lower than the Walker County and Alabama state averages, while its English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency rates are generally higher.

Curry Elementary School also faces disparities in student group performance, with female students outperforming male students and white students underperforming compared to the state. The school's special education students perform significantly worse than their peers, but its low socioeconomic status (SES) students perform relatively better. These findings suggest that Curry Elementary School may need to implement targeted interventions and support to address these academic and equity challenges, while also building on its strengths in supporting low-SES students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is a terrible school. If thinking of buying a house in this area, PLEASE CONSIDER YOUR CHILDREN. The Curry community is a wonderful one and the high school is passable. However, the elementary school lost my child for over 20 minutes on her first day of kindergarten! She was finally found on a bus after those 20 grueling minutes of not knowing where my 5 year old was, only that she wasn't at school. When asked if my daughter had made anyone aware she doesn't ride a bus, the principal stated "We don't take their word for it!" A teacher later told me "that" only happens "once a year". Once a year of losing a 5 year old is far too much! Only 2 short days later I walk my daughter in and find a kindergarten (5 year old) boy sitting outside of an empty classroom, inside a dimly lit hallway, very close to an exit door with absolutely no teacher in sight! The child could have been gone in an instant and no one at Curry Elementary would have known. They would have just marked him absent and went on with their day.

Do whatever you must to avoid this school, but don't expect the Walker County Board of Education to be much help. I've tried that. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
