Columbiana Middle School

Summary:

Columbiana Middle School is a public middle school serving 428 students in grades 6-8 in Columbiana, Alabama, which is part of the Shelby County School District. While the school is part of a generally high-performing district, Columbiana Middle School faces several challenges, including lower academic performance, declining statewide rankings, and significant performance gaps between student subgroups.

Columbiana Middle School has a significantly higher percentage of white students (72.43%) compared to the state average for middle schools (around 50%), but its academic performance, as measured by state assessments, is generally lower than the Shelby County and Alabama state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, the school's 8th grade math proficiency rate was 24.82% in 2023-2024, compared to 29.95% for Shelby County and 22.06% for the state. Additionally, the school's statewide ranking has declined over the past several years, from a high of 102 out of 430 Alabama middle schools in 2014-2015 to 206 out of 442 in 2023-2024, and it is currently rated 3 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger.

Columbiana Middle School's performance on state assessments varies significantly by student subgroup, with larger gaps between the highest-performing (white students) and lowest-performing (African American and Hispanic students) groups. This indicates potential equity issues that the school may need to address. Furthermore, the school has a relatively high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch (63.32%), suggesting that it serves a disadvantaged student population, which may contribute to its lower academic performance compared to other schools in the Shelby County district and the state. Nearby schools, such as Helena Middle and Oak Mountain Middle School, have higher proficiency rates and statewide rankings, indicating that Columbiana Middle School may need to implement targeted interventions and strategies to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is by far one of the worst schools in the county. The administrators are only interested in teaching to pass state tests and not interested in the education. Many teachers and staff have bullied students and have also told students that they are dumb and that they hate their students. It makes me sick to think anyone would want their children damaged by the staff and their desire to only get a pay check. Please consider your child before putting them in danger at this school. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
