Ps 100 Coney Island School (The)

Summary:

Ps 100 Coney Island School (The) is an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York, serving 615 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. This high-performing school consistently outshines the surrounding New York City Geographic District #21 and the state of New York in academic proficiency, with standout results in English Language Arts and Math.

Ps 100 Coney Island School (The) boasts impressive academic achievements, with 72% of 3rd-graders proficient in ELA and 79% proficient in Math, far exceeding the district and state averages. The school's strong performance is reflected in its consistent ranking among the top elementary schools in New York over the past decade. However, the school's student population is predominantly white, in contrast to the more diverse racial makeup of nearby schools like Ps 209 Margaret Mead and Ps 225 Eileen E Zaglin (The). Additionally, the school has a lower percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds compared to its neighbors, raising questions about equity and access to high-quality education.

Despite its academic excellence, Ps 100 Coney Island School (The) spends more per student ($17,476) than the nearby schools, which range from $16,952 to $26,046 per student. This higher spending could be a contributing factor to the school's strong performance, but it is important to consider how these resources are being utilized to support the diverse needs of all students in the community.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Overcrowded school, with poor leadership that came to a halt during COVID pandemic. Unable to keep up with remote learning, lacking in staff and competence. It is at best, a free babysitting, for a working parent. This school should have been closed or defunded. It used to have a good reputation, due to parents investing their time and money in tutoring, hence, improving school statistics on test results and other academic achievements. Previous "success" has nothing todo with the actual education provided by this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
