Ps 90 Edna Cohen School

Summary:

Ps 90 Edna Cohen School is an elementary school in Brooklyn, New York, serving students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade, with a diverse student population of 11.66% White, 23.32% African American, 47.83% Hispanic, and 15.22% Asian students.

Academically, Ps 90 Edna Cohen School has struggled, with proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math lower than the New York City Geographic District #21 and state averages across all grade levels. For example, in 5th grade, the school's ELA proficiency rate was 44.93%, compared to the district's 51.48% and the state's 45.09%. The school's performance varies across different student subgroups, with African American and English Language Learner (ELL) students performing relatively well, while Asian and White students have struggled. The school's high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 85.97% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, may contribute to these academic challenges.

Interestingly, the nearby schools in the same district have varied academic performance. Ps 95 Gravesend (The) and Ps 212 Lady Deborah Moody have performed better than Ps 90 Edna Cohen School, while Ps 188 Michael E Berdy and Ps 288 Shirley Tanyhill (The) have struggled even more. Despite the relatively high per-student spending and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Ps 90 Edna Cohen School's academic performance has not shown significant improvement, suggesting that simply increasing funding and reducing class sizes may not be enough to address the underlying challenges faced by the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Disgrace!! To allow this so called principal to remain as head of this school tells you all you need to know about NYC school system, period. The NYC Board of Education is completely gutless in their quest to support this poor excuse for a principal. It is a disservice to the students and teachers of the school to have her remain in this position. No wonder this school has been rated UNSATISFACTORY. God Bless America. I will pray for this poor misguided Mrs. Hawkins. Close Quote

Open Quote An utter disgrace!! To allow a racist, bigoted, religious zealot to remain in the position of a NYC public school principal is beyond mind boggling. AND the NYC Board of Education agrees with her and is supportive of her statements and actions! It is a disservice to the students of the school and the members of that community to have her remain in this position . The state rating of PS 90 under this Principal's stewardship has been UNSATISFACTORY. Nanny Bloomberg - where are you now?? Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
