Ps 49 Willis Avenue has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (73.81%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 54.71% to 76.28% Hispanic students. The school's academic performance, as measured by the percentage of students proficient or better in New York State Assessments, is generally higher than the New York City Geographic District #7 average, but lower than the New York state average. For example, in 2022-2023, 32.79% of 3rd-grade students at Ps 49 Willis Avenue were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 29.63% in the district and 44.89% statewide. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools, with a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past several years, placing it in the bottom 50% of schools in the state.

Despite the high per-student spending at Ps 49 Willis Avenue ($22,421 in 2022-2023), the school's academic outcomes remain below the state average, suggesting that additional resources alone may not be the solution to improving student performance. The school's strengths lie in its service to Hispanic and English Language Learner students, but overall, it appears to be underperforming and in need of further investigation and targeted interventions to improve student outcomes. Nearby charter schools, such as South Bronx Classical Charter School II and Success Academy Charter School-Bronx 1, have outperformed Ps 49 Willis Avenue in recent years.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Teachers should not get paid for taking naps during school hours. This has been going on for years . Location near the gym . There are many without employment, and many who work very hard for min wages. Disgraceful to say the least. Plus our children should be supervisored at all times.. It's ashame that a teacher of all the professions is setting such a very bad example for our children. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
