Ps 154 Jonathan D Hyatt

Summary:

Ps 154 Jonathan D Hyatt is an elementary school in the Bronx, New York, serving 223 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. Despite being part of the low-performing New York City Geographic District #7, Ps 154 stands out with its strong academic performance, particularly among its African American, Hispanic, and English Language Learner (ELL) students.

Ps 154 Jonathan D Hyatt outperforms the surrounding district and state averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency. For example, in 3rd grade ELA, the school had a 45.83% proficiency rate, compared to 29.63% for the district and 44.89% for the state. The school's African American and Hispanic students also perform significantly better than their peers in the district and state, with the African American students ranking 365 out of 936 New York elementary schools and the Hispanic students ranking 734 out of 1,503, both with a 3-star rating. Additionally, Ps 154's ELL students excel, ranking 183 out of 1,001 New York elementary schools with a 4-star rating.

While Ps 154 Jonathan D Hyatt's academic performance is impressive, the school faces challenges related to its high poverty rates, with 97.76% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. This is in contrast to nearby Success Academy Charter School-Bronx 1 and South Bronx Classical Charter School II, which outperform Ps 154 in overall academic achievement and have lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students. Nevertheless, Ps 154's strong performance, particularly among its underserved student populations, suggests that the school is making a significant impact in its community and could serve as a model for other schools facing similar challenges.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
