A L Brown High

Summary:

A L Brown High is a public high school in Kannapolis, North Carolina, serving 1,741 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Kannapolis City Schools district, which is ranked 217 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

A L Brown High has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools, with a higher percentage of Hispanic (38.08%) and African American (26.65%) students. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom half of North Carolina high schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its performance on End-of-Course (EOC) exams is significantly lower than the state and district averages, particularly in Math I (8.2% proficient) and Biology (22.5% proficient). Additionally, the school has an extremely high percentage of students (99.83%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

While A L Brown High's performance is generally lower than the state and district averages, some nearby schools, such as Cox Mill High School and Cabarrus-Kannapolis Early College, demonstrate significantly higher academic achievement. This suggests that factors beyond just the school's demographics may be contributing to the differences in performance. Addressing the challenges faced by A L Brown High, including the declining academic performance and significant achievement gaps between different racial/ethnic groups, will likely require a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that addresses both academic and non-academic factors impacting student success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote It is a very calm and great school. You have fun doing what you like. It has just opened a new and advanced S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.) academy. In this school you have your own net-book that you get to take home with you. It has all sorts of sports you can get involved in and also a lot of clubs. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
