North Hills Elementary

Summary:

North Hills Elementary is a public elementary school in Winston Salem, North Carolina, serving 494 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Winston Salem / Forsyth County Schools district, which is ranked 164 out of 242 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

North Hills Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of African American (53.24%) and Hispanic (38.66%) students compared to the surrounding schools, which tend to have more diverse racial compositions. The school consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its proficiency rates in mathematics, reading, and science are significantly lower than the district and state averages across all grade levels. Additionally, over 99% of North Hills Elementary students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

In contrast, nearby schools such as Speas Elementary and The Downtown School have significantly higher academic performance and more diverse student populations. This suggests that North Hills Elementary may be struggling to provide the same level of educational opportunities and resources to its predominantly African American, Hispanic, and economically disadvantaged student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote this school has a lot issues, because when dealing with other people kids and their education they all seem to fall short. Our daughter is a student here and she is always been singled out all the time. North hills make me and my wife very concerned when we send her everyday. We are the type of parents that take interest in our daughters education. some of the teachers want let us know things that are going on throughout the day we have to investigate everything ourselves. sad. Pray our babies at this school that they are safe and protected. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
