Hanes Magnet School

Summary:

Hanes Magnet School is a public middle school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, serving 906 students in grades 6-8. As part of the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools district, Hanes Magnet School has consistently performed well, ranking in the top 33% of North Carolina middle schools for the past several years and maintaining a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

One of the key strengths of Hanes Magnet School is its academic performance, with students consistently outperforming the district and state averages in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, Hanes Magnet School had significantly higher proficiency rates in mathematics compared to the district average. The school also boasts a strong Gifted and Talented program, ranking in the top 5% of North Carolina middle schools for this student group. Additionally, Hanes Magnet School has a diverse student population, with a racial makeup that is more representative of the surrounding community than many of the nearby schools, such as Clemmons Middle School and Mineral Springs Middle.

However, Hanes Magnet School is not without its challenges. While the school performs well overall, there are significant disparities in the performance of different student subgroups, with Hispanic students consistently ranking in the bottom 10% of North Carolina middle schools. Additionally, the school has seen an increase in the percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students. Furthermore, Hanes Magnet School's statewide ranking has declined in recent years, suggesting that the school may be losing ground relative to other high-performing middle schools in the state, such as Wiley Magnet Middle.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I'm a student here in Hanes, and currently everything is draining every student possible. There is weed everywhere, making people sick, we're stressed out, those of minorities are falling behind in the worst ways possible. I'm neurodiverse and a person of color, and I only have A's and B's because of how much I have to overwork myself. Last year left everyone unprepared and unready for this year. I am very sad that teachers leave students in such suffering and pain, especially those with harsh homes like myself. Everyone is suffering with the drugs and lack of empathy from students and staff alike. This school is draining and makes me wanna quit at everything completely and just hide away from it. I don't recommend this if you have a child of color, a neurodiverse child, or any child that isn't in the HAG program, wealthy, no, rich, and white. Close Quote

Open Quote As of current i believe that the justice system that these power maniacs have in place is completely wack. The teachers are either horrible or amazing. From what I've heard normal ed is full of fights and AG is a nightmare. HAG is probably the best way to go in this mess of bullies and screwed justice systems. Oh and don't try to take anything up with the school as they'll probably ignore you and you'll end up having wasted 30 minutes of time being on hold and then being held up on. Good education, bad everything else. If you want your child to be constantly stressed/become a bully then send them here. Close Quote

Open Quote Hanes middle school has an excellent program for the HAG (Highly Academic Gifted) students. Our daughter has blossomed and been challenged academically. We have thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are going to send our other children there. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
