The Alberta School of Performing Arts

Summary:

The Alberta School of Performing Arts is an elementary school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, serving grades PK-8 with a student population of 671. The school is part of the Tuscaloosa City School District, which is ranked 86 out of 137 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

The Alberta School of Performing Arts consistently ranks in the bottom half of Alabama elementary schools, with significantly lower performance on state assessments compared to the Tuscaloosa City and Alabama state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. The school's African American, Special Education, and Low Socioeconomic Status student subgroups perform particularly poorly, often ranking in the bottom half or bottom third of Alabama elementary schools. With a very high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, the school's academic challenges suggest that socioeconomic factors may be significantly impacting student achievement.

In comparison to nearby higher-performing schools, such as Rock Quarry Elementary, Verner Elementary, and Tuscaloosa Magnet School Elementary, The Alberta School of Performing Arts lags significantly in academic proficiency rates and overall school rankings. While the school's focus on performing arts may be a contributing factor, implementing targeted interventions, professional development, and aligning the curriculum to state standards could be crucial for improving student outcomes and closing achievement gaps.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have taught in seven elementary schools in the Tuscaloosa City Schools. Alberta is by far my favorite. Mrs. Parker, the principal, is an amazing, dedicated professional. The staff at Alberta is exceptional-- hardworking, creative, and very dedicated to the students.
The facility itself is top notch. It is clean and well decorated.
If I lived in the Alberta neighborhood I would be more than happy to have my child attend Alberta Elementary. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
