D A Smith Middle School

Summary:

D A Smith Middle School is a public middle school in Ozark, Alabama, serving 485 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Ozark City School District, which is ranked 79 out of 137 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While D A Smith Middle School has a more diverse student population compared to nearby schools like Headland Middle School and Coppinville School, it has consistently underperformed academically. In the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Summative Assessment/Mathematics ranged from 22.15% to 26.06%, lower than the state average of 22.06% to 31.56%. The school's performance in Summative Assessment/English was also below the state and nearby school averages. Additionally, D A Smith Middle School has a significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch at 64.95%, compared to nearby schools with rates ranging from 39.2% to 78.4%.

The school's academic performance has been declining over the years, dropping from a statewide ranking of 193 out of 438 Alabama middle schools in 2013-2014 to 220 out of 442 in 2023-2024. However, the school's performance for certain subgroups, such as Hispanic and White students, is relatively stronger compared to the state and district averages. This suggests that the school may be able to leverage the strengths of these subgroups to improve overall academic achievement. Despite these challenges, D A Smith Middle School's diverse student population and higher percentage of students from low-income backgrounds set it apart from the more homogeneous and higher-performing nearby schools like New Brockton Middle School and Dauphin Junior High School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote People who live in Ozark has no choice, but if you live in Fort Rucker, DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILDREN TO THIS SCHOOL! The 8th grade language art is horrible she won't do any extra work to help a child and just don't know how to teach. The school will not approve children for 504 or IEP because they don't want to pay or do any extra work. If you care for your children education stay away from this school. I always warn new families that move to Fort Rucker. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
