West Morgan Elementary School

Summary:

West Morgan Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-4 in Trinity, Alabama, part of the Morgan County School District. The school has seen a gradual decline in its student racial makeup, with the percentage of White students decreasing and the percentage of Hispanic students remaining around 34% in recent years.

West Morgan Elementary has shown mixed performance on standardized tests compared to state and county averages. While the school outperformed the state average in 3rd grade math, it underperformed in 4th grade math, science, and English. The school's performance on subgroup metrics is also mixed, ranking in the top half for female and Native American students but in the bottom half for male students, Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students with low socioeconomic status. The school's statewide ranking has fluctuated over the years, declining from a 4-star rating in 2012-2013 to a 2-star rating in 2022-2023.

Compared to nearby Decatur City elementary schools, West Morgan Elementary generally underperforms on test scores, particularly in math and science. For example, in 4th grade math, West Morgan's proficiency rate was 20.97% compared to 39.58% at Frances Nungester Elementary and 37.5% at Julian Harris Elementary. This may be due to West Morgan's significantly higher percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch (69.48%) and larger student-teacher ratio (20.5) compared to the Decatur City schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote West Morgan Elementary is a wonderful school. It has a diverse student body, and over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. It is a Title 1 school which means it qualifies for tons of extra state funding and opportunities based on lower income levels of families whose students attend. The community is very close-knit, and there are numerous opportunities for students and parents to be involved in and outside of school. West Morgan Elementary school staff works hard to ensure parents have lots of opportunities to be involved in their students education. All teachers employed are also highly qualified. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
