Pelham Ridge

Summary:

Pelham Ridge is an elementary school in Pelham, Alabama, serving 789 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Pelham City School District, which is ranked 29th out of 137 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Pelham Ridge has a more diverse student population compared to surrounding schools, with higher percentages of Hispanic (28.77%) and African American (22.31%) students. Academically, the school's performance on state assessments is generally lower than the Pelham City district and Alabama averages, particularly in mathematics. However, Pelham Ridge's African American students perform exceptionally well, ranking in the top 5-10% of Alabama elementary schools for this subgroup. In contrast, the school's Hispanic and White student subgroups perform relatively lower compared to their peers statewide. Additionally, Pelham Ridge has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 18.32% in 2021-2022 to 44.23% in 2022-2023, indicating a growing population of economically disadvantaged students.

Compared to nearby schools, Pelham Ridge's academic performance is generally lower than Pelham Oaks Elementary, which is also part of the Pelham City district, as well as the high-performing schools in the Shelby County and Hoover City districts, such as Oak Mountain Intermediate and Trace Crossings Elementary. Pelham Ridge's declining statewide ranking and performance gaps among student subgroups suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Corporate punishment still continues here. It has been outlawed in 29 states. Kids have to run laps military style at recess. If one is in trouble then all are in trouble and running regardless of medical history or how hot it is outside.

Also the administration, teachers and counselors do not feel the need to respond to communication from parents and guardians.

Students fill out the Google Classroom asking for help with bullying with a known bully and the counselors do not feel the need to respond.

Anything goes on the buses as well. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
