Terrell Elementary

Summary:

Terrell Elementary is a public elementary school in Denison, Texas, serving around 350 students in grades PK-4. The school is part of the Denison Independent School District, which is ranked 603 out of 968 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Terrell Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with a higher percentage of African American (14.29%) and Hispanic (24.57%) students compared to nearby schools. However, the school has seen a concerning decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from 1313 out of 4578 Texas elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 3337 out of 4675 in 2023-2024. This decline is reflected in the school's SchoolDigger rating, which has dropped from 4 stars to 1 star. While African American and Hispanic students have performed relatively well, the school's performance for White students and students with special needs has been much lower, ranking in the bottom 10% and 15% of Texas elementary schools, respectively.

Terrell Elementary's STAAR test scores in reading and math for 3rd and 4th grades have consistently lagged behind the district and state averages, with proficiency rates ranging from 30% to 40% compared to 40-50% for the district and 45-50% for the state. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students (75.71% in 2022-2023) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. In contrast, nearby schools within the Denison ISD, such as Hyde Park Elementary and Mayes Elementary, have shown stronger academic results, with higher STAAR proficiency rates and better statewide rankings.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My children attend Terrell Elementary and I am also a substitute teacher for the district. Of all the schools in Denison, it is the most organized, welcoming, and encouraging campus. The teachers are top-notch and truly care about their students. The Principal and office staff are wonderful and are always there to help. I highly recommend this school! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
