Lamar Elementary

Summary:

Lamar Elementary is a public elementary school in Denison, Texas, serving 478 students in grades PK-4. While the school has a higher percentage of White students compared to nearby schools, it faces several challenges, including lower academic performance, a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and a higher student-teacher ratio.

Lamar Elementary's STAAR test scores in reading and math for 3rd and 4th grades are generally lower than the Denison Independent School District and state averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 37.21% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in STAAR Reading, compared to 40.74% for the district and 48.85% for the state. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 70.29% to 76.02% over the past three school years, significantly higher than the nearby schools.

While Lamar Elementary has a higher per-student spending compared to the nearby schools, such as Mayes Elementary and Hyde Park Elementary, its performance still lags behind. The school's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 1840 out of 4,320 Texas elementary schools in 2014-2015 to 2,576 out of 4,675 in 2023-2024, suggesting a need for improvement in the school's academic performance and resource allocation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child had to change schools at the end of his third grade year because his elementary school was closed. I was very nervous for him because he's autistic and doesn't do well with change. This move turned out to be the biggest blessing for our family. Lamar has a structured learning class for autistic students that supports him as he continues to be full inclusion in the regular classroom The campus also uses a positive behavior intervention system that recognizes good behavior. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
