Kelly Mill Middle

Summary:

Kelly Mill Middle is a public middle school located in Blythewood, South Carolina, serving grades 2-8 with a total enrollment of 1,058 students. The school is part of the Richland 02 School District, which is ranked 33 out of 75 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Kelly Mill Middle faces several challenges, including a high percentage of African American students (69.94%) compared to the surrounding schools, which range from 21.26% to 80%. While the school outperforms the district and state in the percentage of students proficient or better in EOCEP/Algebra 1/Mathematics for the Technologies 2 for End of Course, it underperforms in most other subject areas and grade levels for the SC READY English Language Arts and Mathematics assessments. The school's statewide ranking has declined over the past few years, from 114 out of 310 South Carolina middle schools in 2021-2022 to 205 out of 325 in 2023-2024, with a 2-star rating. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as multi-racial students, low socioeconomic status students, and gifted and talented students.

Interestingly, Kelly Mill Middle's performance is generally lower than the nearby Dent Middle and Blythewood Middle schools, which are also part of the Richland 02 district. However, the school outperforms some of the Richland 01 district schools, such as Crayton Middle, W.A. Perry Middle, and Alcorn Middle, in certain subject areas and grade levels. Despite the higher per-student spending and a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Kelly Mill Middle's overall academic performance is not commensurate with the resources invested in the school.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote worst school my son ever attended. Teachers and staff are not willing to lend a hand to help students. Bullying is a huge problem. Administration tells you they are concerned yet do nothing to help and after 2 weeks of waiting you talk to them again with no knowlege of what is going on with the issue. Teachers are rude and talk to parent with lack of respect. INC program is excellent with lots of great teachers. Only good teacher outside of INC was the spanish teacher Mrs Cruz (I believe that is her name). Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
