Shaker Hts High School

Summary:

Shaker Hts High School is a public high school serving 1,498 students in grades 9-12 in Shaker Heights, Ohio, which is part of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights City School District.

Academically, Shaker Hts High School performs well, with high proficiency rates on Ohio state tests, including 80.4% in American Government, 69.5% in American History, and 66.8% in English II - all above state averages. The school also boasts a consistently high four-year graduation rate, reaching 93.7% in the 2023-2024 school year, outperforming nearby schools like Cleveland School Of The Arts High School (85.9%) and Cleveland Heights High School (90.3%). However, the school has seen a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 6.9% in 2019-2020 to 36.4% in 2023-2024, which is an area of concern.

While Shaker Hts High School performs well academically, it faces challenges related to supporting its high percentage of low socioeconomic status students, ranking 658th out of 822 Ohio high schools in this category in 2023-2024. The school and district should focus on addressing this issue to ensure all students have the resources and support they need to succeed.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote The environment is toxic and horrible and sure, kids are prepared for colleges, but they're all heavily medicated and only /some/ kids have the opportunity to be prepared for college. Your parents have to proactive and you have to get lucky in terms of teachers in elementary, or else you won't succeed. It doesn't matter how smart you are or how hardworking you are-- all that matters is if you're one of the 10 or so kids who gets targeted by the infallible bullies with million-dollar homes or if your parents are there to push administration to do what they need to make you succeed.
And God help you if you aren't the most left-leaning person on the face of Earth. Close Quote

Open Quote Now that my two children have graduated and gone off to college the value is clear. They were prepared, well educated and well rounded. One graduated with her bachelors in 3 years thanks to her writing skills and AP credits earned at Shaker, all while taking up the sport or rugby and a work/study job plus a semester of study abroad. The second benefited from and academic and band scholarship (even as a biology major) and plays a varsity sport.
Test scores I like as a measurement, but make sure your child is getting an education that has them able to think critically, reason, express themselves and exercise judgement. A school like Shaker helps a kid by offering and encouraging so much that they find a pace to grow and mature. And for heavens sake, pick a school with social, racial and economic diversity and watch the valuable education interaction and experience provide.

We chose Shaker for a couple of good reasons, turns out there were many other good reasons we didn't even know about until after graduation.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
