Ps 14

Summary:

PS 14 is an elementary school located in Troy, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 425 students. It is part of the Troy City School District, which is ranked 650 out of 865 school districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While PS 14's overall academic performance is below the state average, the school stands out in several areas. Its proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are generally higher than the Troy City School District averages, and it has relatively strong performance among African American and English Language Learner (ELL) students compared to other New York elementary schools. However, the school's performance for Hispanic, White, and Multi-racial students is below average. With a high percentage of students (76%) receiving free or reduced-price lunch, PS 14 serves a population with significant economic disadvantage.

Interestingly, PS 14 spends more per student ($15,715) than the state average and nearby schools, and it has a lower student-teacher ratio of 8.8, suggesting a focus on smaller class sizes and potentially more individualized attention. While PS 14 is not the highest-performing school in the region, it performs better than the other Troy City School District elementary schools, such as PS 18, PS 16, and Carroll Hill School. This suggests that while PS 14 has room for improvement, it is a relatively stronger school within its own district.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
