Haviland Middle School

Summary:

Haviland Middle School is a public middle school located in Hyde Park, New York, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 759 students. The school is part of the Hyde Park Central School District, which is ranked 686 out of 866 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Haviland Middle School faces several challenges, including a diverse and economically disadvantaged student population, inconsistent academic performance, and significant disparities in achievement across different student subgroups. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math are generally lower than the state and district averages, and its performance varies significantly across different student subgroups. While Asian and male students perform relatively well, African American, Hispanic, and multi-racial students, as well as English Language Learners and students with special needs, tend to have lower proficiency rates. Compared to nearby middle schools like Marlboro Middle School, Union Vale Middle School, and Bulkeley Middle School, Haviland Middle School generally underperforms in terms of academic achievement.

Despite the relatively high per-student spending at Haviland Middle School, the school's academic outcomes do not seem to reflect this level of investment, suggesting that factors beyond just funding may be contributing to the school's performance challenges. The school has also experienced a decline in enrollment over the past few years, with the percentage of white students decreasing from 59.32% in 2020-2021 to 51.65% in 2022-2023. This shift in racial composition may be an important factor to consider in understanding the school's academic performance. Addressing the issues at Haviland Middle School will likely require a comprehensive approach that focuses on targeted interventions, resource allocation, and a deeper understanding of the school's unique context and needs.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Very few options for students who are not struggling. They have time built into the day to help the remedial students. However for any child who is not among that group, they cannot even offer a full days schedule. The tax rate in this town is through the roof but money has not equated to quality education. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
