Hastings High School consistently ranks among the top high schools in New York, with a statewide ranking of 18 out of 1,242 schools for the 2023-2024 school year. The school has maintained a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger for the past decade, indicating exceptional academic achievement. While Hastings High School's academic performance is exceptional, it is worth noting that the school serves a relatively affluent student population, with a low percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch. This contrasts with some nearby schools, such as Gorton High School and Greenburgh Eleven High School, which have a much higher percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Additionally, Hastings High School has experienced relatively high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 11.0% to 37.8% over the past few years, which is an area the school may want to address to ensure consistent student engagement and attendance.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Lack of diversity among faculty and students means history is not taught effectively, contextually or meaningfully. White teachers are teaching white students. When a high school has 510 students in four grades, yet only 14 of them identify as black, class discussions are between two groups white and other whites with a couple of Hispanics/Latinx/Asians tossed in. Race relations are merely theoretical in all subjects at HOH, but most notably in English and history. Theory but not based in reality or any personal experiences. Discussions are reinforcement of the white, male narrative and point of view, making for a superficial, empty, dangerously simplistic world view. A white, male, patriarchal world view. The books chosen to read are those that white males have deemed important. A black, female superintendent does not, has not, had a trickle-down effect. As I write this, there are no black, male or female, science, math, foreign language, art, drama, music, English nor history teachers k-12. There are no black male or female coaches. This truth despite the fact that HOH is less than 20 miles from Grand Central. An HOH high school education offers an incomplete world view and does not prepare young minds for the colorful, joyful real world. Blacks and other minorities that do attend the school (not teach there are no black teachers k-12) are rarely, if ever, in charge or in positions of authority. Hispanic and Asian voices are quiet, but black and Native American voices, silenced. It's very disappointing that once they (loud parents and backed by staff) kicked BOCES out, the black population decreased by almost half and has remained at 14 students to about 510, for years. Lots of white liberal parents and conservative, overtly racist parents who are fine with the school remaining just as it is: overwhelmingly white at 74-75. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
