Cairo-Durham Elementary School

Summary:

Cairo-Durham Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 439 students in grades PK-5 in the Cairo-Durham Central School District located in Cairo, New York. The school district is ranked 473 out of 865 districts in the state and is rated 2 stars out of 5 by SchoolDigger.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student ($17,699 compared to the state average of $25,000) and low student-teacher ratio (8.6 students per teacher), Cairo-Durham Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of New York elementary schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on state assessments is generally below the state average, with proficiency rates ranging from 31.94% to 51.9% in ELA and 48.61% to 82.5% in math, compared to state averages of 42.6% to 47.05% in ELA and 48.93% to 58.03% in math. The school also performs below nearby schools like Riccardi Elementary School, Pieter B Coeymans School, and Cahill School, which have higher proficiency rates and serve a lower percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

While Cairo-Durham Elementary has seen some variation in the performance of different student subgroups, with Hispanic students and special education students performing relatively well, the school's overall academic performance remains a concern. The high spending and low student-teacher ratio suggest that factors beyond just funding and resources may be contributing to the school's underperformance, such as curriculum, instructional practices, or other school-level factors. Further investigation into these areas may be necessary to identify the root causes and develop targeted strategies for improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My niece came to live with me this year in NH. She came from Cairo Elementary School where she was supposedly doing well and reading at grade level. She entered the 4th grade here and we discovered that she was so far behind academically and she is needing a lot of extra help to catch up to the other kids. Tutoring and the school's reading program on a daily basis are helping but she is still below average. Way to go Cairo!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
