Baychester Academy

Summary:

Baychester Academy is an elementary school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 302 students. This school stands out as a high-performing institution, consistently outperforming the New York City Geographic District #11 and the overall New York state in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates across grades 3-5.

Baychester Academy's academic performance is exceptional, particularly for its African American and low-socioeconomic status (SES) students, who rank in the top 5% and top 25% of New York elementary schools, respectively. The school's female students also perform exceptionally well, ranking in the top 20% of New York elementary schools. Despite having a high percentage of students (78.81%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage, Baychester Academy is effectively supporting and empowering these students, providing an equitable and inclusive learning environment for students of all backgrounds.

The school's steady increase in per-student spending, from $16,629 in 2019-2020 to $22,812 in 2022-2023, and its low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.7 to 14.3 in recent years, suggest that it is receiving adequate funding and resources to support its students' success.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My children have been attending Baychester Academy for the past year and a half. Our family loves this school. The administration and staff are very open and they sincerely care about the academic and social well-being of the children.

The P.T.A. is highly committed to ensuring that there is a working relationship between the school and the parents/guardians.

There are plenty of opportunities for enrichment during the school day as well as with the after-school program.

The school opened in 2009 and will have grades PK-5 when it reaches full capacity next year (2013-2014). Right now it has PK-4. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
