Junior High School 144 Michelangelo

Summary:

Junior High School 144 Michelangelo is a public middle school in the Bronx, New York, serving 421 students in grades 6-8. The school faces challenges common to many urban schools, with a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds and a diverse racial/ethnic composition.

Academically, the school's performance is mixed, with stronger results in certain subject areas and grade levels, particularly on Regents exams. However, the school's overall ranking and rating from SchoolDigger suggest room for improvement. Interestingly, the school's female students outperform their male counterparts, and the African American and Hispanic students perform better than the state average for their respective racial groups. Comparing Junior High School 144 Michelangelo to nearby middle schools, such as Bronx Alliance Middle School and Baychester Middle School, which have similar demographic profiles but lower academic performance, highlights the potential for better outcomes at Junior High School 144 Michelangelo.

The school's proximity to higher-performing middle schools, such as Middle School 180 Dr. Daniel Hale Williams and IS 181 Pablo Casals, as well as the Capital Preparatory Bronx Charter School, which has significantly stronger academic performance, suggests that there are opportunities for the school to learn from the successes of these nearby institutions and potentially implement targeted interventions to address achievement gaps, particularly for male students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child goes to this school I consider it a terrible school because they don't really know what is going around in the school my daughter says that everyone in her class never pays attention in class the students disrespect the teachers and disturb the class plus the students be walking around the hallways skipping/cutting class while others students yell at the teachers brake the books and calculator my child is terrified everyday when she goes to this school because of the big bad behavior going around in this school so if you are whiling to put your child in this school don't send them to this school do your child a favor and find a better school. By the way the lunch food is just disgusting my child never eats the school lunch or else she will get sick from the stomach. There are fights between the students everyday sometimes during lunch and most of it is when they come out of the school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
