Ps 153 Helen Keller

Summary:

PS 153 Helen Keller is an elementary school located in the Bronx, New York, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 463 students. The school is part of the New York City Geographic District #11, which is ranked 646 out of 865 districts in New York and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

PS 153 Helen Keller consistently performs above the New York City Geographic District #11 and New York state averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates across grades 3-5. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's 5th-grade ELA proficiency rate was 55.81%, compared to 33.23% for the district and 43.68% for the state. The school also has strong performance among specific student subgroups, particularly Asian and African American students. Despite having a high percentage of students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, PS 153 Helen Keller has consistently outperformed the district and state averages in academic proficiency.

While PS 153 Helen Keller outperforms the district and state averages, some nearby schools, such as Baychester Academy and Bronx Charter School for Better Learning, also demonstrate strong academic performance. However, one area of concern for PS 153 Helen Keller is the performance of its special education student subgroup, which ranked 1,747 out of 2,110 New York elementary schools in 2023-2024, with a 1-star rating. This suggests that the school may need to focus on improving the academic outcomes for its students with special needs.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Between the office staff, teachers and Principle I don't know whose more unprofessional. They have demonstrated on many occasions that they're incapable of handing emergencies or incidents that occur while your child is in their care. The assistant principle has more expertise with dealing with important matters than the principle who has no idea how to address a parent. The office staff are rude, and when asked to do anything that involves any documents they get their attitudes and act as if it's not there job to relay messages. They lack people skills and you can tell that teaching and dealing with children is not their passion, as they cold towards children who they don't favor. Close Quote

Open Quote This school has been an excellent fit for my daughter. Teachers and adminstration believe in preparing children at an early age for college and the world beyond. Children are trained to take pride in themselves, their work and to respects others. Children are encouraged and motivated to perform at their highest potential. They are exposed to the Arts and different cultures through study, field trips and workshops. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
