Riverside School For Makers And Artists (The)

Summary:

Riverside School For Makers And Artists (The) is a public magnet elementary school serving grades PK-8 in New York City's District 3, with 437 students located in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan. Despite its focus on "makers and artists," the school has consistently ranked in the bottom quarter of New York elementary schools over the past decade, earning 0-2 out of 5 stars from SchoolDigger.

Riverside School For Makers And Artists (The) significantly underperforms the district and state averages on state assessments in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, with only 23.68% of 3rd graders proficient in ELA compared to 64.18% in the district and 42.6% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low for certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic students, English Language Learners, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. In contrast, nearby schools like Anderson School, PS 87 William Sherman, and PS 199 Jessie Isador Straus consistently perform in the top 10-20% of New York elementary schools, with 70-100% of students proficient in ELA and Math.

Despite spending significantly more per student ($24,043 in 2022-2023) compared to the nearby higher-performing schools, Riverside School For Makers And Artists (The) has a high percentage of students from low-income families (82.61% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch) and a more diverse student population. This suggests that factors beyond just resources may be contributing to the school's underperformance, and addressing the unique challenges faced by the school's socioeconomically disadvantaged and diverse student population will be crucial for improving academic outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I love this school. I am very happy and my kindergartener asked me if he can come back for first grade. I couldn't be happier. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter has been attending this school for two years. We absolutely love it. The staff is warm and caring and enthusiastic and the academics are strong. Very good parent/teacher communication. Wonderful music and dance programs. Great museum partnerships. They are getting a state of the art technology center.
This is a great school! Close Quote

Open Quote Don't be fooled. Remember never judge a book by its cover. Our last year's scores do not do us justice. The work we do in our school is amazing. Scores have already improved in the upcoming year. All grades PreK through 8 use inquiry based and project based learning connecting everything to the real world instead of some arbitrary textbook. We have fabulous partnerships with Studio in a School, Lincoln Center Institute, Border Crossers, and more. We recently won a Magnet Grant, which will take our already amazing school and take it to the next level. We have been renamed the Museum Magnet School for Inquiry, Innovation and Imagination. Our excellent and well educated Master Teachers will be able to integrate more museum experiences and aesthetic education into the core curriculum. We are worth taking a look at. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
