Ps 111 Adolph S Ochs

Summary:

Ps 111 Adolph S Ochs is an elementary school located in New York City's District 2, serving grades PK-5 with a total enrollment of 383 students. While the school has been rated 3 out of 5 stars by SchoolDigger for the past several years, indicating average performance compared to other New York elementary schools, a closer look reveals some key challenges it faces.

One of the primary concerns is the school's consistently underperforming student achievement on state assessments in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Math, with proficiency rates lagging behind the District 2 and statewide averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 41.18% of 3rd graders, 55.77% of 4th graders, and 42.55% of 5th graders at Ps 111 Adolph S Ochs were proficient in ELA, compared to 73.25%, 80.1%, and 71.73% respectively in the district. The school also struggles with its English Language Learner (ELL), Hispanic, and Low Socioeconomic Status (SES) student populations, ranking in the bottom 5% and bottom 50% of New York elementary schools for these subgroups.

Interestingly, Ps 111 Adolph S Ochs is located in close proximity to several higher-performing school options, such as Ps 33 Chelsea Prep, Ps 212 Midtown West, and the highly-ranked Anderson School, which outperform Ps 111 across multiple metrics. This suggests that families in the area have access to better educational options, despite Ps 111's relatively high per-student spending and lower student-teacher ratio compared to nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This school needs much improvement in regards to some of the staff members. I would never send my kid to this school. Do yourself a favor and find another school. Close Quote

Open Quote I toured PS111 today. I was happily surprised to find such an engaging principal. Principal Gilligan took the time to sit down with me and answer all the questions I had. It's clear he cares about his school and is very attentive. From my meeting with him he cares about the child as a whole, meeting their individual academic needs so that every child's academic life is enriched, paying attention to their social emotional growth and promoting physical activity which unfortunately is lacking attention in most schools today. As a prospective parent I am very impressed. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
