Ps 87 William Sherman

Summary:

PS 87 William Sherman is an exceptional elementary school in New York City's District 3, serving 667 students from pre-kindergarten to 5th grade. This top-ranked school has consistently outperformed the district and state averages in academic proficiency, making it a standout institution in the New York education landscape.

PS 87 William Sherman's academic performance is truly impressive, with 92.11% of 5th-grade students proficient or better in English Language Arts (ELA) in the 2023-2024 school year, compared to just 62.29% in District 3 and 43.68% statewide. The school also excels in serving diverse student populations, with top-100 rankings for female, male, white, and special education students in New York state. Additionally, the school's low student-teacher ratio of 14.8 and high per-student spending of $18,617 in 2022-2023 likely contribute to its strong academic outcomes.

While PS 87 William Sherman is a standout, it is not the only high-performing elementary school in the area. Nearby schools like PS 166 Richard Rogers School Of The Arts & Science (The) and PS 9 Sarah Anderson also demonstrate exceptional academic performance, suggesting a concentration of quality elementary education options in the local area. However, the low percentage of free/reduced lunch recipients at PS 87 William Sherman (10.94%) may raise questions about the school's accessibility and equity for students from lower-income families, an issue that warrants further investigation.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I went to this school for three years. Before moving to a different state and changing schools I never realize what a bad situation I was in at William Sherman. I had a problem in my my mouth which made my tooth look a little weird this led to relentless bullying kids had thrown rocks and sticks at me called me ugly to my face and even my third grade teachers basically called me up to their desks in the middle of class work and had me show them my tooth one teacher then told the other " Wouldn't you like to look at that all day" My own teachers had called my disgusting to my face almost every day my mom had to write the school a note telling the principal and my teachers about a bullying situation. Open Quote The Dual Language program in this school is amazing and feel extremely lucky to be part of it.
The fact that my daughter will be bilingual from a public school education is notable and commend worthy. More schools should have programs such as this. Language is a powerful tool. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
