Lakewood High School

Summary:

Lakewood High School is a public high school in Lakewood, New Jersey, serving 1,423 students in grades 9-12. The school is part of the Lakewood Township School District, which is ranked 501 out of 615 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lakewood High School consistently ranks in the bottom half of New Jersey high schools, with a statewide ranking between 264-361 over the past several years. Its academic performance is significantly below state averages, with only 31.6% of 9th graders proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 52.1%. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 17.7% to 33.6% in recent years, and a lower-than-average four-year graduation rate around 82-84%. Over 85% of Lakewood High School's students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage.

In comparison, nearby high schools such as Point Pleasant Borough High School, Point Pleasant Beach High School, and Howell High School generally perform much better on academic metrics, graduation rates, and other key indicators. However, Lakewood High School's English Language Learner (ELL) students, as well as its special education and racial minority students, perform relatively better compared to the school's overall struggles, suggesting the school may be providing additional support for these subgroups.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I'm currently a student at Lakewood High School, the whole Lakewood District is screwed up and corrupted. You absolutely shouldn't even consider sending your child to any of the Lakewood Schools. Look into the private school in Lakewood, Calvery Academy, there strict but your child will learn. It's a private Christian School. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
