Lalor Elementary School

Summary:

Lalor Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 337 students in grades PK-5 in the Hamilton Township Public School District in New Jersey. The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population (72.7%), with smaller percentages of African American (18.1%), White (3.86%), and other racial groups.

Lalor Elementary School faces significant academic challenges, consistently performing below the district and state averages on standardized tests. In 2022-2023, only 14.5% of 3rd graders, 6.5% of 4th graders, and 25.7% of 5th graders were proficient or better in English Language Arts, while in mathematics, the proficiency rates were 16.7% for 3rd grade, 7.9% for 4th grade, and 19.5% for 5th grade. The school has also experienced a concerning increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 6.9% in 2016-2017 to 22.8% in 2021-2022, significantly higher than the district and state averages. Additionally, 79.82% of Lalor Elementary students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high percentage of students from low-income families.

While Lalor Elementary School's performance is concerning, the nearby schools, such as George E. Wilson Elementary School and Kisthardt Elementary School, which also serve predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged populations, generally perform better academically. Interestingly, Lalor Elementary School's African American and Hispanic students perform significantly better than their peers in the school, suggesting the school may be more effective in supporting these student populations. However, the school struggles to effectively educate its special education and English Language Learner populations, indicating a need for targeted interventions and strategies to improve educational outcomes for all students at Lalor Elementary School.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote As a teacher at Lalor Elementary, I have never been this disrespected by students. It’s such a shame that the administration is not supportive or understanding of teachers’ perspectives and does absolutely nothing about addressing discipline. The teacher morale is very low at this school. Students talk over each other, talk back to their teachers, and pick on each other constantly both inside and outside of the classroom. I wish that as an educator, I was not blamed for causing my students to misbehave, but rather valued and understood as someone who cares deeply about their well-being and physical safety. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
