Parkland High

Summary:

Parkland High is a public magnet high school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, serving 1,519 students in grades 9-12. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority of Hispanic (50.1%) and African American (38.25%) students, as well as smaller percentages of White, Asian, Native American, Pacific Islander, and multi-racial students.

Despite its diverse student body, Parkland High consistently ranks in the bottom half of North Carolina high schools, with significantly lower performance on state assessments compared to the district and state averages. The school's academic challenges are particularly pronounced for Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) students, who rank in the bottom 20-25% of high schools in the state. In contrast, the school's performance is slightly better for African American and multi-racial students, who rank in the bottom 30-35% of high schools. Parkland High's special education and low socioeconomic status (SES) students perform better, ranking in the bottom 40-50% of high schools. With over 99% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, Parkland High has an extremely high percentage of economically disadvantaged students.

Compared to nearby schools, Parkland High's performance is significantly lower than magnet schools like Atkins Academic & Technical High and Early College of Forsyth County, which rank in the top 15-20% of North Carolina high schools. Other nearby schools, such as Mount Tabor High and R.J. Reynolds High, also outperform Parkland High academically, ranking in the middle 40-50% of the state. This suggests that the academic challenges faced by Parkland High may be disproportionately impacting its predominantly minority and economically disadvantaged student population, highlighting the need for targeted interventions and support.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Listen, we were underfunded and understaffed and overlooked by the school board. The students and teachers did the best they could. But, it's hard to learn in an environment where most students are treated like criminals, and the teachers can barely pay their bills. The administration is at fault. The school board is at fault. Parkland is what you make of it. You can develop meaningful relationships with students and teachers, and the IB program is not to be overlooked. However, when compared with wealthy schools like Reagan, Parkland is so lacking in resources that it is often difficult for students to succeed. It's tough to be a Parkland student, through no fault of our own. But, students from Parkland have gone onto universities like Harvard, Yale, Wake Forest, George Washington University, NC State, Boston College, University of Chicago, and UNC. When given the time, support, and energy from teachers and administrators that we need, we can go on to do great things. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
