Mexico High

Summary:

Mexico High School is a public high school serving 746 students in grades 9-12 in Mexico, Missouri, which is part of the Mexico 59 School District. While the school has shown some improvement in its graduation rates, it continues to face significant challenges, ranking in the bottom half of Missouri high schools and struggling with low test scores, high chronic absenteeism, and disparities in performance across different student subgroups.

Mexico High School's performance lags behind many of its nearby counterparts, such as Hallsville High and Centralia High, which consistently outperform Mexico High in state rankings, test scores, and graduation rates. The school's proficiency rates in core subjects like Algebra I, Biology I, and Government are well below the state averages, and its chronic absenteeism rates are significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, Mexico High's performance varies greatly across different student subgroups, with the school ranking in the bottom 10% of Missouri high schools for African American students and in the bottom quarter for White, Multi-racial, Disabled, and Low Socioeconomic Status students.

Despite increased spending per student over the years, the academic challenges at Mexico High School persist. The school's high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch suggests that socioeconomic factors may be contributing to the academic struggles. Addressing these underlying issues and improving student engagement and support may be crucial in helping Mexico High School provide a better educational experience for its students and close the performance gaps with nearby schools.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Students find a lot of areas to fit in and get engaged. A highly professional faculty and staff takes care of students at this high school located next to a career center. Students have so any options - sometimes it's hard to choose. This past summer their media and journalism department won a national Robert F. Kennedy award. Students traveled to Washington D.C. to accept the award from Kerry Kennedy - daughter of RFK. There are no perfect schools, but this school is where teachers care and work to help every kid succeed! About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
