Houston High

Summary:

Houston High is a public high school serving 374 students in grades 9-12 in Houston, Missouri. The school is part of the Houston R-I School District, which is ranked 188 out of 386 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Houston High has several strengths, including consistently high graduation rates ranging from 89.8% to 95.2% in recent years, and relatively low dropout rates between 1.6% and 2.7%. However, the school's performance on state assessments is mixed, with strong results in Biology I but lower proficiency in Algebra I compared to the state average. The school serves a significant population of low-socioeconomic status students, with 41.18% receiving free or reduced-price lunch, which is a key factor in its performance.

Compared to nearby schools, Houston High generally outperforms Plato High and Summersville High, but lags behind Cabool High in some metrics, such as graduation rates and test scores. The school has shown improvement over time, with its statewide ranking rising from 379 out of 460 Missouri high schools in 2018-2019 to 108 out of 378 in 2023-2024. However, the school still faces challenges, such as high chronic absenteeism rates, which it will need to address to continue its upward trajectory.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Houston High School is a very poor school. Most of its funding comes from the government. The conditions of the high school are poor as well - 360 or so students crammed into one building, with only one restroom per gender, each with four toilets. There was previously a second building that classes were held in, but it has been deemed unsafe to use since 2008. The older community has been rallying to keep the building up despite the fact it's literally falling apart, so it currently cannot be removed to build anything new. As a result, every class is held in the main high school, in either gym, or in the Vocational Technical building. The ala carte menu is hideously overpriced. The yearbooks are also hideously overpriced for the work that's in them (also, you don't receive the yearbook until October or November of the next year - so if you got a yearbook for the 2005 - 2006 school year, you'd receive it in October or November 2006). The school lacks up-to-date learning materials (my English book for my College Preparatory English class was over 20 years old) and harbors justifiably disgruntled teachers working for low wages. The setting is VERY rural, VERY conservative, and some of the school's policies (such as dress code) reflect that. I would not recommend Houston High School to anyone else due to the general filthiness, dreariness, and squalor that can be found there. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
