Myers-Wilkins Elementary

Summary:

Myers-Wilkins Elementary is a public elementary school in Duluth, Minnesota, serving 341 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Duluth Public School District, which is ranked 191 out of 463 districts in the state and has a 3-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Despite having a relatively low student-teacher ratio, Myers-Wilkins Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Minnesota elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state assessments. The school struggles to support the academic achievement of several student subgroups, including African American, White, and multi-racial students, as well as students with special education needs and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. This is in stark contrast to several nearby high-performing schools, such as Lester Park Elementary, Congdon Elementary, and Lowell Elementary Spanish Immersion, which consistently rank in the top quartile or top half of Minnesota elementary schools.

The high poverty rates and concentration of students from disadvantaged backgrounds at Myers-Wilkins Elementary may be contributing factors to the school's low academic performance. The data suggests that targeted interventions and support are needed to address the specific challenges faced by the school, particularly in supporting the academic achievement of its diverse student population. Strategies to improve performance could include implementing evidence-based instructional practices, providing additional professional development for teachers, and implementing comprehensive support systems for students and families.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote There is a big problem with bullying, and racisim. Also the Principal never answers or returns calls. Bus aids dont pay attention to the kids when getting the children on the bus to go home. Close Quote

Open Quote Great place for the kiddos that are unusual in some way...b/c there's no standard mold here. Small class sizes relative to other public elementary schools. Children who need acceleration are not left to languish but get a lot of opportunity, and the Gifted and Talented Experience is currently being redesigned. After two years at MW, my child continues to score extremely high on standardized tests. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
