Winans Elementary School

Summary:

Winans Elementary School is a public elementary school in Lansing, Michigan, serving 384 students in grades 1-4. The school is part of the Waverly Community Schools district, which is ranked 461 out of 610 districts in the state.

Winans Elementary has a diverse student population, with 39.84% White, 35.42% African American, 5.47% Hispanic, and 3.12% Asian students. However, the school consistently underperforms compared to the district and state in M-Step English Language Arts and Math proficiency rates for 3rd and 4th-grade students. For example, in 2023-2024, only 26.9% of 3rd-grade and 21.2% of 4th-grade students at Winans were proficient in ELA, compared to 28.9% and 30.9% for the district, and 39.6% and 43.3% for the state. Additionally, Winans has experienced a significant increase in chronic absenteeism, rising from 13.9% in 2018-2019 to 28.2% in 2022-2023, which is much higher than the state average.

While Winans Elementary's overall academic performance is low, the school's African American students have performed relatively well compared to their peers in the state. However, the school's ranking has steadily declined over the years, from 587 out of 1,580 Michigan elementary schools in 2014-2015 to 1,185 out of 1,486 in 2023-2024. This decline in ranking coincides with a decrease in student enrollment. Winans Elementary's academic performance is generally lower than the nearby Elmwood Elementary and Meryl S. Colt Early Childhood Education Center, but it performs better than some schools in the Lansing Public School District, such as Cumberland School and Forrest G. Averill School, which have even lower proficiency rates and higher chronic absenteeism.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
