Bendle Middle School

Summary:

Bendle Middle School is a public magnet middle school located in Burton, Michigan, serving around 230 students in grades 6-8. The school is part of the Bendle Public Schools district, which is ranked 520 out of 610 districts in Michigan and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bendle Middle School faces significant challenges, including a student population that is predominantly white (70%) compared to nearby schools, consistently high chronic absenteeism rates (ranging from 32.7% to 68.1%), and consistently lower academic performance than the state and surrounding school averages. For example, in 2023-2024, only 12.9% of 6th-grade students were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to the state average of 37.5%. The school also has a very high percentage of students (over 90%) who qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. Despite the high spending per student at Bendle Middle School ($17,126 in 2022-2023), the academic outcomes do not reflect this level of investment.

Compared to nearby schools, such as Davison Middle School and Hahn Intermediate School, Bendle Middle School's performance is significantly lower, with these nearby schools having higher academic performance, lower chronic absenteeism, and more diverse student populations. The school's declining statewide ranking, from 713 out of 821 Michigan middle schools in 2016-2017 to 789 out of 897 in 2023-2024, suggests that the school is struggling to improve student outcomes, particularly for male students, white students, and students from low socioeconomic backgrounds.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My child will absolutely not be going back to this school, it is beyond horrible. I have 3 kids graduated from high school, none that went to any Bendle school. My youngest that attends this school is in 6th grade, she has only attended Bendle schools for 3 yrs. First year in middle school. They have the worse principal ever, he is the biggest part of the problem (Mr. Gleason). Teachers often have substitutes in their classroom. The work is not what they should be taught for their grade level. They are constantly micromanaging & concerned with trivial things. When they should be more focused & concerned on the curriculum they are teaching, test scores, student performances, & bullying the allow to continue repeatedly. Close Quote

Open Quote Bendle Middle School Staff treat all the children like trash because of the low income ratio in the district. Bullying is not dealt with, and in more cases then most, the victim is treated with disrespect and humiliated even more by staff.Parents do not volunteer because they feel alienated and as if their opinions do not matter. Children are not given a chance to learn and it seems all the staff is here to collect a check. Really..... you don't see any of the teachers and administrators children in this school, because they don't care!!!!!!!!!! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
