Farwell Elementary School

Summary:

Farwell Elementary School is a public elementary school in Lewiston, Maine, serving 392 students in grades PK-6. The school is part of the Lewiston Public Schools district, which is ranked 174 out of 177 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Farwell Elementary stands out for its diverse student population, with 60.2% White, 26.02% African American, 4.85% Hispanic, and 9.93% other races - a significantly higher percentage of non-white students compared to nearby schools like Raymond A. Geiger Elementary School and Thomas J McMahon Elementary School. However, the school consistently ranks in the bottom 25% of Maine elementary schools, with only 49.5% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts, 39.6% in Mathematics, and 8.33% in Science - all well below state averages. Farwell Elementary also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, reaching 54.3% in the 2021-2022 school year, more than double the state average.

The school's challenges may be linked to its high percentage of economically disadvantaged students, with 57.65% receiving free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. While Farwell Elementary's performance has declined over the years, the diversity of its student population and the presence of other lower-performing schools in the Lewiston Public Schools district suggest an opportunity for the school to improve and become a model for serving underserved communities. With the right strategies and resources, Farwell Elementary could potentially turn around its performance and provide a high-quality education to its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I am a mother who has raised 3 children in Lewiston public school system and just removed my youngest from Farwell Elementary because of a plethora of issues. I am grateful my older students didn’t have the as unacceptable of an elementary education as my youngest recieved here. As a 2nd grader, my daughter was not learning many fundamentals she needed to meet standards. I know a lot of parents blame common core but that is really secondary in this equation. The problem we found was if criteria wasn’t covered on testing, it wasn’t taught or introduced to her at all. No English. No spelling (told to look it up in a dictionary) She has no knowledge whatsoever of our solar system or space. None. She had no idea who George Washington was.. or Abraham Lincoln. STEM “is another name for science” was for making slime and recycled paper, robots but absolutely no idea what the universe was. The atmosphere is incredibly hostile towards parents - you are either agreeable or you are the “problem”. If there is a request for communication from your students teacher you can expect to be ignored and if you bring this to the principal, Amanda Winslow, you can also expect to be blamed for the lack of communication. You don’t have reasonable access to this school (or any in LPS - PTO is nothing but a cheering squad or fundraising mechanism) Your child can be beat up right on the playground (recess is a very minimal here) and faculty never seems to witness the repeated assaults. They don’t see because they aren’t watching them - at all. They’re too busy having personal conversations and keeping backs turned to students who are running amok. And, by assault, I mean several boys to one. The leadership enables the poor behavior an neglegant staff. Amanda Winslow is cold and she is more likely to admonish you as a parent than her educators for their horrendous results. These scores are often blamed on “poverty” or “ELL” but that is merely an attempt to deflect and refute any accountability. After 7 years, I see through these excuses and have removed my youngest. This school (and LPS) scores low because they can’t take responsibility for their poor choices and educators. They score low because they protect and enable their staff even when they should show them the door. They hire anyone and have low standards, hence the low scores. And they have a huge ego with absolutely nothing to show for it except groupies that feed their constant need for praise. Most parents have absolutely no idea how horrible their scores are or even realize what their children aren’t being taught, it’s not like they notify you and say we rank nearly last in the state, it’s easy to blame the state or common core but the reality is Farwell isn’t even trying to remedy their rankings, and the fewer parents that know this, the better for them. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
