IPS/Butler Lab at Eliza Blaker 55

Summary:

IPS/Butler Lab at Eliza Blaker 55 is a PK-8 elementary school in Indianapolis, Indiana, serving a diverse student population of around 500 students. The school has struggled academically, ranking in the bottom 30% of Indiana elementary schools and receiving a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

One of the key challenges facing IPS/Butler Lab at Eliza Blaker 55 is its high chronic absenteeism rate, which has ranged from 17.6% to 34.8% in recent years, significantly higher than the state and district averages. The school's test scores on the ILEARN assessments are also consistently below the state and Indianapolis Public Schools district averages, with only 22.47% of students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 20.6% in math. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 46.62% to 48.8% in recent years, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-income families.

When compared to nearby schools, such as Rousseau McClellan School 91 and the Center for Inquiry schools, IPS/Butler Lab at Eliza Blaker 55 is struggling academically, with significantly lower test scores and higher chronic absenteeism rates. However, the school's spending per student has increased over the years, and the student-teacher ratio has remained relatively low, suggesting that the school may have the resources to support student learning. By addressing the underlying issues of chronic absenteeism, low test scores, and socioeconomic and racial disparities, the school and the Indianapolis Public Schools district can work towards improving educational outcomes for all students.

Open Quote While it's only the beginning of the year, I am happy with what the experience has been like so far. My son is a third grader which I think is a time of learning critical information, so I am happy that he has a very small class, I believe 15 or 16 students. He came from a very good school with 24/26 students and sometimes I felt he got lost in the shuffle in regards to improving areas that he needed to work on and getting the personal attention that often times an only child may need. Will keep you all updated. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
