Brightwood Elementary School

Summary:

Brightwood Elementary School is a public elementary school in Washington, DC, serving 591 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) district, which is ranked 26th out of 47 districts in DC and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Brightwood Elementary has a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (77.16%) compared to the district and state averages, but lower percentages of White (1.86%) and Asian (0.17%) students. The school consistently underperforms the DCPS and DC state averages in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, only 9.9% of 3rd graders were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 35% for DCPS and 28.2% for DC. Brightwood Elementary has been ranked in the bottom half of DC elementary schools for the past several years, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school performs particularly poorly for its Hispanic and English Language Learner (ELL) student subgroups, but better for its African American student subgroup.

While Brightwood Elementary has seen a significant increase in per-student spending, from $22,850 in 2019-2020 to $33,551 in 2022-2023, and maintains a relatively low student-teacher ratio, this increased funding does not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes. Neighboring schools, such as Truesdell Elementary and John Lewis Elementary, demonstrate higher academic performance and better overall rankings compared to Brightwood Elementary, despite serving similar student populations.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
