Summary:

Winthrop STEM Elementary Magnet School is a public magnet school in New London, Connecticut, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade. With a diverse student population, the school consistently outperforms the New London School District and the state of Connecticut in academic assessments, particularly in STEM subjects.

Winthrop STEM Elementary Magnet School stands out for its strong academic performance, with 5th-grade students scoring 39.5% proficient or better in SBAC/English Language Arts, compared to 20.6% for the district and 51.4% for the state. As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Whinthrop has made big changes. In 2012 they switched over to being a magnet school. My son has attendees since the switch and we couldn't be happier. When he was in a local public school he was slightly behind. Not enough to need extra help, but far enough that as parents we were worried. He hated reading and struggled with it. We mad the switch to winthrop when he was entering the 2nd grade and he excelled! Now in 4th grade he's reading at a middle school level and has passed benchmark in all tests. While this school is a stem school(science, technology, engineering and Mathmatics) they so far beyond the learning he was getting at his last school. If a child needed help in a certain area, they will be moved to the group that gets the most intervention with a teacher. The staff is wonderful from the secretary, to the nurse to the dean. They are all welcoming and helpful. My son is challenged and pushed and has learned so much. Even with their extended hours, he never complains about going to school and the enrichment programs have been wonderful! Every month he's learning something new from someone in the community. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
