Barack H. Obama Magnet University School

Summary:

Barack H. Obama Magnet University School is an elementary public magnet school in New Haven, Connecticut, serving grades PK-4 with 311 students. Despite being a magnet school, the school struggles academically, with consistently low proficiency rates in English Language Arts and Mathematics compared to the New Haven School District and the state of Connecticut.

The school has a significantly higher percentage of African American (44.05%) and Hispanic (44.05%) students compared to nearby schools, which tend to have a more diverse racial composition. Additionally, the school has a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 69.09% to 81.03% over the past 3 years, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population. While Barack H. Obama Magnet University School has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, it consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Connecticut elementary schools, with a 0-1 star rating from SchoolDigger.

Interestingly, other nearby magnet schools like Mauro-Sheridan Magnet School and Beecher School perform significantly better academically, with higher proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Mathematics. The higher per-student spending at Barack H. Obama Magnet University School compared to nearby non-magnet schools also raises questions about the effective allocation of resources and the need for a deeper analysis of the school's educational programs and strategies.

Open Quote I thought that the performance of a president was supposed to be independent of the performance of a school. Instead, this school is much lauded for doing nothing, mostly black, and not very good at its purported task. Based on how much was spent for this disaster, the people doing the budget went to a similar school and also failed to learn math. Therefore, as a good teacher, I recommend honorary university-level accreditation on the basis of diversity. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
