Oliver Elementary School

Summary:

Oliver Elementary School is a public elementary school located in Seale, Alabama, serving 463 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Russell County School District, which is ranked 94 out of 137 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Oliver Elementary has a diverse student population, with a roughly even split between White (50.32%) and African American (35.42%) students. However, the school's academic performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally below the state and district averages. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the percentage of students proficient or better in Mathematics ranged from 21.79% (5th grade) to 34.43% (3rd grade), compared to the state averages of 37.13% to 42.16%. The school's English proficiency rates were also lower than the state and district averages. Interestingly, Oliver Elementary ranks relatively high for African American students (top 30% in the state), but much lower for White students (bottom 25%) and students with special needs (bottom 10%).

Oliver Elementary has a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 75.81% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2022-2023 school year. This may be a contributing factor to the school's lower academic performance, as research has shown a strong correlation between socioeconomic status and educational outcomes. While Oliver Elementary's performance is generally lower than the state and district averages, some of the nearby schools, such as Ladonia Elementary and Dixie Elementary, have higher academic achievement in certain areas, suggesting that there may be opportunities for Oliver Elementary to learn from their practices and strategies.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I think Oliver Elementary is a wonderful school. I know that Russell county schools get a lot of negative ratings but in my opinion Oliver Elementary is one of the best schools in the state. We are a military family and we have three children ranging from Elementary to high school age and I have never been disappointed in Oliver. Even when we moved away and came back 5 years later we enrolled our children into this school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
