Harlan Elementary School

Summary:

Harlan Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-4 in Florence, Alabama, which is part of the Florence City School District. The school has seen a shift in its student racial makeup, with the percentage of African American students increasing and the percentage of White students decreasing in recent years.

Academically, Harlan Elementary has struggled compared to the district and state averages, with only 30.12% of 3rd graders and 46.67% of 4th graders proficient or better in Mathematics, and 55.42% of 3rd graders and 55.74% of 4th graders proficient or better in English Language Arts. This is likely due to the school's high percentage of students from low-income families, with 89.8% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. However, Harlan Elementary has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12.4 students per teacher, which may indicate a focus on smaller class sizes.

When compared to nearby schools like Weeden Elementary and Forest Hills School, Harlan Elementary stands out as having a significantly higher percentage of students from low-income families and lower academic performance, particularly in Mathematics. This suggests that the school may face unique challenges in supporting its student population and may benefit from targeted interventions and resources to improve student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Harlan is a wonderful school with caring, very qualified teachers and a very active and supportive principal,Dr. Coker, who loves the school and cares about the children in so many ways. She expects a lot from the teachers and the students. Therefore, the school indicates this in test scores and in behavior of the children and by her and the Harlan hiring committee's choice of teachers who work there. I have had grandchildren to attend there in times past under a different principal who was also a wonderful principal and they have achieved so much in their lives which began with being educated in their early elementary years at Harlan. They went on to college and one is still at UNA. The other has finished her masters and is in a fellowship program with the government. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
