Midland City Elementary School

Summary:

Midland City Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 453 students in grades PK-4 in Midland City, Alabama, which is part of the Dale County School District. The school has a diverse student population, with 52.76% White, 35.32% African American, 5.08% Hispanic, 0.66% Asian, and 5.96% two or more races. However, a high percentage (78.81%) of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively low socioeconomic status of the student body.

Academically, Midland City Elementary School has consistently ranked in the middle to lower range of Alabama elementary schools, with proficiency rates in math, science, and English language arts (ELA) lagging behind state and district averages. The school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American students and students with special needs performing relatively better compared to the overall school, while white students and students with low socioeconomic status perform in the bottom 50% of the state. The school also has a relatively high student-teacher ratio and lower spending per student compared to nearby schools like Newton Elementary School and some of the Dothan City elementary schools.

Despite the overall lower academic performance, Midland City Elementary School's relatively stronger performance for African American students and students with special needs suggests that the school may be providing effective support and resources for these subgroups. However, the high percentage of students from low-income families and the lower academic performance compared to nearby higher-performing schools highlight the need for targeted interventions and support to address the challenges faced by the school's diverse student population.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Great Country School, I have noticed that they don't a lot of learning field trips. There are several that all ages could go on for example: Aplin Farms in October, Museum at Fort Rucker, Fun Zone Skating Center and many more. They also don't have a field day in May, they have a fun day which is during p.e. time and parents aren't aloud to come. other than that this school and it's staff is great. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
