South Bend High School

Summary:

South Bend High School is a public high school serving grades 7-12 with 266 students in South Bend, Washington, which is part of the South Bend School District. The school has a diverse student population, with 43.23% White, 42.86% Hispanic, and 10.15% two or more races, which is higher than the nearby Naselle-Grays River Valley Junior Senior High Schools, which has a student population that is 75.39% White.

Academically, South Bend High School's performance, as measured by standardized test scores, is generally below the state average. In the 2023-2024 school year, only 32.2% of students were proficient or better in SBAC/Math across all grades, compared to the state average of 41.68%, and only 20.63% of students were proficient or better in WCAS/Science across all grades, compared to the state average of 49.73%. The school's four-year graduation rate has also declined from 93.7% in 2018-2019 to 89.6% in 2022-2023, while the dropout rate has increased from 4.1% to 3.4% during the same period.

However, South Bend High School's diverse student population and the relatively better performance of its Hispanic and female students are positive aspects. For example, in the 2023-2024 school year, the school's Hispanic students ranked 87 out of 248 high schools in Washington, and the female students ranked 124 out of 347 high schools. Additionally, the school has seen a significant increase in its per-student spending, from $12,878 in 2019-2020 to $22,730 in 2021-2022, which may be an attempt to address the school's academic challenges, though the impact on student outcomes is not yet clear.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
