Bow Lake Elementary

Summary:

Bow Lake Elementary is a public elementary school located in SeaTac, Washington, serving around 500 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Highline School District, which is ranked 192 out of 247 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bow Lake Elementary faces significant academic challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 10% of Washington elementary schools with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's proficiency rates in English Language Arts, Math, and Science are significantly lower than the Highline School District and state averages, particularly for African American and Hispanic students. However, Bow Lake has a relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher per-student spending compared to the state average, suggesting that additional resources are being directed to the school without commensurate improvements in student outcomes.

Comparing Bow Lake Elementary to nearby schools, such as Midway Elementary, Marvista Elementary, and Tukwila Elementary, these schools generally perform better on academic measures, with higher proficiency rates and higher statewide rankings. Additionally, the high-performing Impact | Salish Sea Elementary and Impact Public Schools stand out as potential models for improvement. The diversity and high percentage of low-income students at Bow Lake Elementary may be contributing factors to the school's challenges, and further investigation is needed to identify effective strategies for improving student outcomes.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have a child that needs lots of help with reading. She is going in to 2nd grade and is well below grade level that is what the test says, so I called the principal and he tells me that's ok and they don't do anything until the third grade and if I want to get her help I have to go fined it and pay for it. The school should pay for it because it is a public school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
