Patrick Henry K-8 School

Summary:

Patrick Henry K-8 School is a public elementary and middle school in Alexandria City Public Schools, serving 978 students from pre-kindergarten through 8th grade. The school has a diverse student population, with a high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, and has faced challenges in academic performance compared to state and nearby school averages.

While Patrick Henry K-8 School performs well in some subject areas, such as 8th grade Algebra I and Civics and Economics, it struggles in 3rd-6th grade Mathematics, with proficiency rates ranging from 44.03% to 60.61%. The school's diverse student population is a strength, but there are significant achievement gaps between different racial groups. For example, the school's African American students ranked 251 out of 588 Virginia elementary schools in Mathematics, while the White students ranked 947 out of 979 schools. Interestingly, the school's English Language Learner (ELL) students have performed relatively well, ranking 184 out of 306 Virginia elementary schools.

When compared to nearby schools in the same district, such as Douglas MacArthur Elementary and James K. Polk Elementary, Patrick Henry K-8 School generally underperforms, particularly in 3rd grade Mathematics. Despite having a relatively high per-student spending of $10,766, the school's academic outcomes have not significantly improved. Addressing the underlying factors that contribute to the achievement gaps and overall academic performance will be crucial for the school's improvement.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Patrick Henry makes use of the much derided Success for All reading program. A canned, scripted and exceedingly poor curriculum. If your child is at all proficient in reading, he/she will quickly exhaust all of the quality books and begin reading the same titles again and again. Worse still, because the program is scripted and all teachers are told exactly what to say, to the minute, creative, innovative and quality teachers leave this school in droves. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter goes to K at Patrick Henry Elementary. At first we are little skeptical about the school. But now after several months we are very very happy with this school.
Specially the principal and stuff are excellent workers. Every time for any kind of help we always get professional help.
We thank you for those helps. And also we hope they stay like that. I know in no time this elementary school will become one of the best school in the nation.
Thank you again for teaching my daughter.

Open Quote I have two kids at Patrick Henry and I could not be happier with the school, the teachers, and the principal. This school is filled with passionate and creative teachers, who really care about their students. The principal and her team are working really hard to get the scores up but without sacrificing actual learning. This is a school full of diversity and Ms. Bynum, our principal, celebrates it and makes it a point of strength. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
