Clermont Elementary

Summary:

Clermont Elementary is a public elementary school in Alexandria, Virginia, serving 553 students in grades PK-6. The school stands out for its consistently high academic performance, diverse student population, and advantageous socioeconomic profile compared to nearby schools.

Clermont Elementary consistently ranks among the top 15% of Virginia elementary schools, with students significantly outperforming district and state averages on SOL assessments in mathematics, science, and English reading. The school's racial makeup is more diverse than many of its neighbors, with a student population that is 60.22% White, 19.53% Hispanic, 6.51% Asian, and 4.34% African American. Additionally, Clermont has a relatively low percentage of economically disadvantaged students at 16.09%, compared to nearby schools like Mount Eagle Elementary (68.88%) and Groveton Elementary (71.25%).

Clermont Elementary's academic excellence and unique characteristics may be attributed to several factors, including a lower student-teacher ratio of 16.3, which is lower than the nearby schools. This smaller class size likely contributes to the school's strong performance. Clermont's consistent high rankings and diverse student population make it an interesting case study for understanding the factors that contribute to successful elementary education, particularly in the Fairfax County Public Schools district, which is ranked 41 out of 130 school districts in Virginia.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote My children both attended Clermont and enjoyed a well-rounded education with caring and dedicated teachers. I am now on staff at Clermont and find it to be a place where I am encouraged to be creative, accountable, and always student-centered. I have taught in many schools in my long career, and this is one of the best. The focus is on the whole child. Technology, rigor, and 21st century skills are integrated throughout the curriculum. There is a great emphasis on character development. Children are encouraged to participate in instrumental music, and every child receives instruction in the fine arts and foreign language (Chinese). We work to meet each child where he/she is and take them as far as they wish to go. The hugely supportive community makes our mission possible. As a community of stakeholders, we can do anything! Open Quote We are moving our child to another school next year. The class sizes are too large. The county has cut the teaching assistants. It makes for a chaotic, learning environment. Due to lack of appropriate supervision, injuries and bullying are a problem. The county guidelines for discipline are loosely enforced by the administration. The extreme focus on SOLs and memorizing facts is unfortunate. Close Quote

Open Quote As you can see this Elementary school is rated #14 in the state out of over 1000 schools. Not only does this school provide a great education, but we have lived in the neighborhood in which this school is located and it is one of the best locations in the DC area with lots of really nice families and children. Secluded, safe and full of young working professionals who put a premium on raising their children in a great community/family environment. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
